What evidence do we have about the drug chloroquine’s capabilities against COVID-19?

US President Donald Trump touted the malaria drug as the medicine that might help fight against the new coronavirus.

It’s true chloroquine has been around for more than 80 years. It has a few side effects including nausea, mood changes as well as possible interactions with other drugs.

Hopes for possible usage of chloroquine as a treatment of the novel coronavirus largely center on a small study in France which used a derivative of chloroquine together with an antibiotic for treating patients.
